129 Criminal Cases Registered at Namugongo Pilgrimage, 96 Arrested.

Kampala: Police in Kampala have confirmed that a total of 129 criminal cases were registered during this year’s Namugongo Martyrs’ Day celebrations, resulting in the arrest of 96 individuals.

The incidents ranged from theft to attempted sexual assault, marring what was otherwise a relatively peaceful pilgrimage compared to previous years.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing held at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala, the Kampala metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire provided a breakdown of the crimes reported.

He revealed that 81 mobile phones were stolen during the event, with only 16 recovered. Additionally, 24 bags were reported missing, 15 of which were later found.

Among those arrested was a suspect accused of attempting to sexually assault a female pilgrim who had recently undergone surgery.

Several others were apprehended in connection with petty thefts and other disturbances within the pilgrimage grounds.
