Kabale University Opens First Public University Campus in Rukungiri

Rukungiri: Kabale University has expanded its services to Rukungiri District by opening a new branch, making it the first public university to operate in the area since its founding.

This development was announced on May 22, during a press conference by the Academic Registrar Naris Tibenderana, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Johnny Mugisha, and Deputy Academic Registrar Canon Benon Kwikiriza. The press conference was held at the former Rukungiri Primary Teachers’ College in Kyakiina, Buyanja Town Council, where the new campus will be based.

The move follows an agreement between Kabale University stakeholders, the foundation body, Rukungiri District leadership, and the Ministry of Education and Sports to convert the former teacher training college into the Kabale University Rukungiri Campus.

This transition comes as part of a government policy to phase out Grade III and IV teacher training qualifications in favor of degree programs. The former Rukungiri Primary Teachers’ College, which began in 1980, will now serve as a center for higher education.

Speaking to the media, Prof. Johnny Mugisha described the initiative as a major milestone for both Kabale University and the Kigezi region. He said the campus would improve access to quality education and boost economic growth in the region.

Academic Registrar Naris Tibenderana stated that the campus would open gradually, starting with a few programs including the Bachelor and Diploma of Education and the Bachelor of Agriculture.

Deputy Academic Registrar Canon Benon Kwikiriza added that the university’s presence would create academic opportunities, support local businesses, generate jobs, and promote urban development.

The campus launch ceremony is scheduled for May 23, and will be officiated by Kabale University Chancellor Prof. Mondo Kagonyera. Officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, along with the area Member of Parliament and other delegates, are expected to attend.
