Go for medical check ups in case of Malaria signs-Residents advised.
Rukungiri: The Rukungiri district Malaria Focal person Edson Muhwezi Mpirime has advised citizens to go for a medical check up in case they develop malaria signs.
He made the call while speaking to our reporter at his office in Rukungiri town at the district headquarters.
Mpirime explained that Malaria has different signs which include fever, headache and chills.
He further said that the government has played a sensitization role and giving out treated mosquito nets to households after every three years.
Mpirime said Bwambara and Bikurungu are the leading sub-counties in Rukungiri district with the highest malaria prevalence because of their proximity to Queen Elizabeth national park.
The Rukungiri district Health Educator Alban Natukunda says people are reluctant to sleep under the treated mosquito nets but have instead decided to use them for construction of poultry houses.
“Most of our people have decided to misuse these treated mosquito nets given to them by the government. This has slowed down the government’s efforts to fight against malaria”. Says Natukunda.
Uganda on Sunday joined the rest of the world to commemorate the World Mosquito Day that is observed every 20th August to celebrate the life of British doctor, Sir Ronald Ross who discovered in 1897 that ‘female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.
In Uganda 100,000 people succumb to Malaria annually according to records from the ministry of health.
