Accident Victim in Rukungiri Appeals for UGX 15 Million to Undergo Urgent Surgery.
Rukungiri: A 24-year-old accident victim, Sedrack Byamukamais is appealing for financial assistance to undergo surgery after being bedridden for two years.
Byamukama, who lives with his mother in Buunda cell, Nyakina ward, Buyanja Town council in Rukungiri district, sustained severe back injuries from a motorcycle accident on Janunary 13, 2022, in Namugongo, Kampala, where he worked as a boda boda rider.
During an interview with our reporter on Novermber 4, Sedrack Byamukama painfully recounted how he initially underestimated the injury, thinking it was minor. Over time, his condition worsened, and he sought medical help. Despite visiting major hospitals in the Kigezi and Ankole regions, he was referred to Nsambya and Mengo Hospitals in Kampala, which quoted UGX 10 million and UGX 7 million respectively for the surgery. Unfortunately, the family cannot afford the treatment.
As a single orphan with no financial support, Byamukama has exhausted all options. His mother, Annah Kyobwine, has been his sole caretaker, struggling to meet his needs while also paying school fees for her younger daughter through casual labor and accumulating debts.
Sedrack Byamukama and his mother are now appealing to well-wishers, church leaders led by Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe of North Kigezi Diocese, and the wider community to help raise the UGX 15 million needed for the life-changing surgery.
The LC1 chairperson for Buunda village Benon Beyongyera, confirmed the dire situation and urged the public, religious leaders, and government officials to assist. The family has even resorted to borrowing a wheelchair from a neighbor.
The mother, Annah Kyobwine has expressed her desperation, even considering selling their home to fund the treatment. She calls on the public to come to their aid to prevent further deterioration of her son’s health.
